Can Damaged Antifreeze Cause the Thermostat to Fail?

Antifreeze that has been overheated or contaminated can cause a build up of sludge, which can clog a thermostat. This can cause the thermostat to fail and your engine to overheat. Usually, if the antifreeze has been overheated, there's a good chance that the thermostat was damaged during the overheating, as well. This is why you should replace both the damaged antifreeze and the (most likely) damaged thermostat.
